2025 June 16 – Youth Day Celebration

We honoured the legacy of the youth of 1976 through a day filled with sports and community spirit.
As Marang A Letsatsi Orphans and Vulnerable Children Programme, we came together to commemorate June 16 by participating in fun activities such as soccer, netball, and many more games. The event took place at Siphiwo Primary School in Harare and brought joy, laughter, and unity to everyone involved.

We are incredibly grateful to Blue Ribbon for their generous support in providing refreshments and helping to organise additional activities for the children. Their contribution added great value to the day.

All participants received medals and care packages as a token of appreciation and recognition for their involvement. The smiles on the children’s faces reminded us of the importance of creating safe, joyful spaces for young people to grow and thrive.

About June 16 – Youth Day in South Africa:

June 16 is a significant day in South Africa's history. It marks the anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when thousands of Black students protested against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools during apartheid. The peaceful protest turned tragic when police opened fire on the students, resulting in hundreds of deaths. One of the most iconic images of the day is that of 13-year-old Hector Pieterson, who was shot and killed during the protest.

Today, Youth Day is observed to honour the courage and sacrifice of the youth who fought for freedom and education. It is also a reminder to continue investing in and empowering young people, especially those from underprivileged and vulnerable communities.
